Anxiety and Stress: This is now being reported by far more people than before the pandemic. Fear, social isolation, boredom and time on their hands has been causing many people to increase smoking, overeating, drinking, drugs, insomnia and even viewing porn sites. Anxiety can destroy concentration, cause overthinking, an inability to make decisions and catastrophizing of minor issues. Hypnosis is a great gift for anyone to use to control these unhealthy habits and to establish new healthy habits. Sleep: Many more people are now reporting a loss of sleep, or frequently waking up in the middle of their sleep. Do not drink alcohol before sleep. You may fall asleep faster, but for most people, alcohol causes a disturbed sleep. Do not stimulate yourself before sleep with exercise, depressing news, bright phone or TV screens. Here is one of the tricks I use: I get comfortable in bed, then inhale 3 long, slow, deep breaths in through the nose and out through the mouth. As I breathe in, I imagine filling up my body as inflating a giant balloon from the feet to the neck. When I breathe out, I imagine the “balloon” deflating from the neck to the feet. After that, I imagine my bed is a big fluffy white cloud. Then, I slowly begin relaxing my body from the bottom of my feet to the top of my head, taking time as I travel up the body to let all tensions melt away for relaxation. I might imagine my limbs as concrete sinking into the cloud. I am usually asleep before I reach the top of my head. I use another technique if I wake up after a dream, perhaps to use the bathroom. I make of mental note of something from the dream, then when I go back to the bed, I recreate the dream in my memory, bringing back the connection to sleep. I usually fall asleep quite quickly again. Highway Hypnosis: When driving a long distance on a straight road, accidents are more common. Curves in roads keep people more alert and reduce accidents. Sometimes curves are added to roads even if they are not needed to increase safety. Watching rain or snow constantly falling on the driver’s window or following a blinking light on a tow truck can also be very hypnotic. It is just like a flashing strobe light which is used to rapidly induce hypnosis.
On long drives, it is easy for the subconscious mind to take over. People may drive for miles and miles and report “I do not remember much of what I passed.” or “I’m here already, where did the time go?” When learning to drive, we make use of our conscious mind: “let’s see now, this is the brake, this is the mirror to adjust, here’s the gas” and so on. After we have experience in driving, it is largely done automatically without consciously thinking about it.
If you just came out of a hot spring pool or if you had too short a sleep before your drive, you are even more likely to drive subconsciously, or even fall asleep. If you are tired, be sure to pull over and do some stretching, a walk or run or take a break with self-hypnosis or a short sleep. Experts suggest a break every 60 to 90 minutes even if you have had a good sleep before driving. Caffeine is a poor solution because it soon wears off and dehydrates the body. Other actions to keep you alert include opening a window and not getting too comfortable in the seat.
Hypnosis and Law Enforcement: Hypnosis has been used for many decades to help people to remember details including events, descriptions of criminals, license plates and more. Some law enforcement personnel have taken specific detailed courses called Forensic Hypnosis to learn how to use hypnosis in criminal investigation. The questions to the witness must be very neutral, not leading questions. Secondly, since the subconscious is so imaginative, the witness may believe what he says is true, but it might simply be his imagination at work. When I performed hypnosis shows over 40 years ago, I did a routine I called “Reincarnation, Return to the Past”. Sometimes 2 or 3 hypnotized people on a stage out of 30 or 40 would “recall” the same past life, such as having been Joan of Arc. Creative imagination is unlimited in hypnosis. People come up with all sorts of stories. So, it is not useful in the courtroom to affirm guilt or innocence. However, hypnosis often has been successfully used for additional information in terms of witness memories that act as leads to solving crimes. Memory while hypnotized can be surprisingly more detailed than in the conscious state.
