COVID-19 AND SMOKING:
Research is absolutely confirmed that smokers face a heightened risk for life-threatening complications with the virus. Dr. Nora Volkow, director of The National Institute on Drug Abuse says: “Smokers are at greater risk, so we need to do all we can to help them quit.” Smokers are more likely to experience severe outcomes including intensive care unit admission, need for mechanical ventilation, or death than non-smokers with the disease.” The World Health Organization also reported: “…the absence of smoking helps reduce the touching of fingers to the mouth.”
American Lung Association Chief Medical Officer Albert Rizzo, MD says: “We know that smoking leads to inflammation of the airways…inflammation is associated with decreases in lung immune defenses, such as fighting off viral and bacterial infections…smokers with COVID-19 face a double-dose of inflammation associated with tobacco use and infection with the COVID-19 coronavirus.”
EXCUSES AND PROCRASTINATION hold people back from success to stop smoking and most everything else:
Buts, excuses and procrastination keep people from enjoying a joyful, vibrant, healthy lifestyle. People want to achieve peace of mind, success, health and happiness, but this is what I hear thousands of times: “But I am different; I’ve tried everything; quitting is hard; I am afraid of gaining weight; what if I get cravings, anxiety or withdrawal; I don’t think it will work; but all my relatives are overweight; but my identity is smoker, fat, etc.; I might lose my tobacco friend; but I need to be there in person, recordings don’t work; but I am addicted… but those sweets taste so good”… yada yada yada. STAY SAFE:
Covid-19 is highly contagious. The best steps are isolation, staying 6-10 feet away from others (who may be unaware they are virus carriers) and to wear a mask if you must go outside. The safest situation outside is if you and everyone else is wearing a mask. Some also wear eye coverings such as close fitting sunglasses, even goggles. Remember frequent hand washing. I wear a mask, eye protection and gloves if I must go in public. Many wash their clothing and shower as soon as they return home. People often become over confident too soon: they don’t complete their prescribed treatment; medication plan or reinforcement. By returning too soon to close contact with others, we may ignite a second and more dangerous wave of the virus and lose all our gains.
HUGGING:
Many people who live alone are saying that they miss human touch, especially hugging. Remember what I always say: “At least once a day, give yourself a big, firm, warm hug and affirm: “I love myself, I am fantastic, I really love myself, I really am fantastic” and other favorite positive affirmations. Let the magic flow into your life. Expect the best!
