Understand and Control How Your Thoughts and Emotions Affect Your Mind and Body Health
Extreme emotional stress or “a broken heart” can cause death. When Debbie Reynolds passed away, her son said that the stress of his sister Carrie Fisher’s death the day before was too much for his mother to take as she planned the funeral for her daughter. Known medically as stress-induced cardiomyopathy, it can strike anyone, even those in good health with no previous heart problems. Debbie Reynolds had said, ‘I want to be with Carrie.”
Broken-heart syndrome occurs when stress hormones, such as adrenaline and cortisol cause arteries to limit blood flow to the heart. The condition can cause heart arrhythmias and sudden death. Barbra Streisand, an advocate for women’s cardiovascular health, said “too many women die of heart disease and stroke like mother and child Debbie Reynolds and Carrie Fisher.” One is even more likely to get a simple cold or flu if living with excessive stress. Stress weakens the entire immune system making us more susceptible to countless illnesses and addictions.
Your thoughts can make your heart pound, cause short, fast breaths and raise blood pressure fast. Your brain and body continually create thousands of different chemicals and hormones that affect your nervous system. This influences your feelings, behavior, immune system and health. 70 to 90% of all visits to physician’s offices are caused by, or made worse by STRESS.
Stress can cause and worsen mental and physical illness drastically. The risk of a heart attack increases about 2 ½ times as much following anger. People with high hostility are more likely to have severe atherosclerosis, hardening, narrowing of the coronary artery. Pessimism seems to increase the risk of illness. People often get cancer 6-18 months after serious multiple stressful events. Animals under stress have an enormously higher cancer rate.
Cancer patients are often called the “nicest people”. Too frequently, they put their own needs aside for others. We all thrive with a strong sense of self-esteem, with the ability to say “no” and with the willingness to satisfy our own needs. Assertiveness and optimism will make you happier and healthier.
Depression after a heart attack must be treated, or it can increase the possibility of an earlier death. I have a friend who has been a funeral director for over 30 years. He tells me that he commonly sees people retiring and shortly after dying. We all thrive on involvement with a purpose and/or people, preferably both. Thinking thoughts of appreciation and gratitude, especially before sleep, will protect your heart. Thoughts before sleep have a powerful effect upon your subconscious mind which communicates closely with your immune system.
A few examples of important actions that will assist your mind and body to release healthy chemicals:
- A happy marriage or close relationship.
- Close friends and family for emotional support.
- Church membership.
- Active group or club memberships.
- Prayer, meditation, guided imagery or hypnosis.
- Progressive relaxation, Yoga, deep breathing exercises.
- Daily physical exercise, stretching for release of endorphins, improved self-image.
- Having a pet for affection and companionship. Animals also have healthy changes in their cardiovascular system while being petted by people.
- Laughter. I enjoy comedians. Laughter has a stimulating effect, activating many muscles like an internal workout with a reduction of stress hormones, the release of “happy chemicals” and followed by a feeling of relaxation.
- Simple and inexpensive pleasures: Relaxing or soothing inspirational music; appreciation of nature, a walk in a forest, a sunset; appreciation of beautiful art; nostalgic moments; a good book, movie or a live play; physical contact with another person; sexual activity.
- Be giving, be a volunteer.
- Express yourself creatively with art.
Dr. Milton Erickson, a most respected psychiatrist and hypnotherapist, regardless of the problem, always sought a goal of happiness for his patient.

Hypnosis is super concentration of the mind. You are not distracted by everyday thoughts. The greater the focus of the mind, the “deeper” the hypnosis. However, even a “light” or “medium’ trance with positive instructions from the hypnotist can produce enormous changes in your life. If the hypnotic directions or commands are not agreeable to the client, they can be rejected by what I call the subconscious censor.
The mind and body constantly influence each other. Imagine your favorite food. Vividly remember what it looks like, smells like, tastes like, feels like in your mouth and sounds like when you enjoy it. If you take time to do this, you will notice the flow of saliva in your mouth. Merely suggesting that a hypnotized person is eating different foods will cause different specific gastric secretions to properly digest each of those different foods.
Most nervous problems people have are caused by self-hypnosis. They have hypnotized themselves and they need to be dehypnotized. People will tell themselves over and over, “I can’t quit smoking”; “My family is all overweight, so I will be too”; “My parent died of this or that, so I fear that will happen to me too!” If you are going to keep repeating thoughts to yourself (hypnotic repetition), you had best make sure that they are positive thoughts, especially what you say to yourself before falling asleep.
The subconscious mind never sleeps, and will mull over, echo, and turn over your thoughts all night, especially the ones that you think about before sleep. Physicians often tell people to relax, but not how to relax. After being hypnotized, many people say “I have never felt so relaxed in my entire life.” Stress and tension influence the nervous system and can contribute to either causing or making worse almost any condition that is seen by a physician. Many skin conditions are a mirror of our emotions.
Mere words and thoughts have a magical power and can cause changes in organs and glands in our body. Our thoughts create chemicals, chemicals affect our feelings and feelings affect our behavior. For example, happy tears and sad tears have different chemicals. Thoughts can cause blushing with the rush of blood to the face. Thoughts can cause the heart to pound or to relax. Thoughts can cause someone to sweat. We have seen candidates perspire during the Presidential debates when they are under stress. Words create anger and feelings of love. Thoughts can heal or not. Professional hypnotists carefully select the words they use to focus a person’s attention and to stimulate their imagination for health, success and happiness.
A worst fear is thinking that something is wrong with you or your mind. This creates needless fear and anxiety. A new way of thinking must be instilled into the mind. Most any problem responds well to hypnosis. Hypnosis usually helps most any problem a little or completely. It is very unlikely that hypnosis cannot be of some help. Sometimes hypnosis requires more than one session. Recorded hypnosis sessions allow the client to repeat and reinforce the hypnosis at any time that is convenient.
Worry, anxiety and fear cause tension and symptoms. Once we have the symptoms, our worry and fear may increase. This increase in worry and fear causes more serious symptoms, so it becomes a vicious circle. For example, if you worry about not sleeping, your sleep habit will become worse. Many have stopped using sleep pills after being hypnotized or learning self-hypnosis. Most sexual disorders from impotence to frigidity respond favorably to hypnosis. “That which I hath feared hath come upon me.”
Worry can cause indigestion, headaches, high blood pressure and countless other conditions. Instructing the subconscious mind to look at challenges in a new way (reframing) can often be one simple solution. Often people have no disease at all, just anxiety, nervous tension and tightness in the body caused by fear. Sometimes words and ideas can do what medicine does not. Finding the cause and removing it can be better than suppression of the symptoms with drugs.
Hypnosis can break that vicious circle with total relaxation, confidence building and other specific instructions presented to the subconscious mind when attention is concentrated. The hypnotist does not “control” anyone. Hypnosis is “en rapport”, two minds working together, an instructor and a student. Hypnosis alone is a tremendous natural relaxant, but it is the specific hypnotic instructions that create the powerful specific changes desired.
Hypnotized people hear everything that the hypnotist says, otherwise they would be in an ordinary sleep. A hypnotised person is not unconscious. They are superaware and totally focused upon the hypnotist’s voice. If a hypnotist says “raise your hand”, the client raises only the hand from the wrist, not the entire arm. A hypnotic sleep is totally different from an ordinary sleep. If a boy runs fast, that is the opposite of the boy being tied fast to a chair. Words can have many different meanings. In addition, how the hypnotist says the word, in terms of pauses, volume level, repetition, and inflection can change the emotion that the word creates in the subconscious. Emotion always intensifies the hypnosis. Many will say to me, “Your voice is so empowering, makes me feel so confident, makes me feel more relaxed than ever before, makes me feel so good”, etc.
The subconscious cannot tell the difference between a real experience and an imaginary experience. People will wake up with a dream fearfully shouting or kicking under the covers. Their sleep partner will say: “Just relax, you are dreaming, everything is ok.” The person with the dream will say: “But it seemed so real.” That’s why people follow the instructions of the hypnotist. The healing words given by the hypnotist become concentrated in the mind of the client, and he follows them. He now believes he is a non smoker, wants to eat and exercise like a slim person, lets nails grow long, sleeps better, and stops drinking alcohol. This is simply because that is the clear picture of themselves that has been locked into their subconscious mind with hypnotic suggestion, imagery and repetition. I call it brain rinsing out the negative and replacing with the positive.
A nervous speaker or actor can be told under hypnosis in many different ways that he is confident, relaxed, poised, looking forward to his appearance; the audience is smiling, excited, applauding; he is speaking enthusiastically, full of energy, thoroughly enjoying his audience, etc. His mind is concentrated and his daydreams under hypnosis seem real to the subconscious mind. You become what you believe. A few more thoughts:
Stop the struggle: “I have to stop smoking”; “I have to be hypnotized”; “I have to get rid of this pain.” Such intensity creates worry, stress, and other negative emotions. Do not “try hard”. People try hard to fall asleep, and can’t sleep. They try hard to remember something, but when they stop trying, the memory often comes back. People try hard for a sexual response, and it becomes less likely.
Change the audio and video: Change the words and pictures in your head. Never say anything negative about yourself. If someone says something negative about you, mentally say: “That’s ridiculous, I am (insert positive thoughts)”. Recognize the negative, reject it, reaffirm and reinforce the positive. For example, my stop smoking recordings tell your mind that you are already a nonsmoker, a clean fresh air breather. When you use hypnosis, affirm, visualize in detail, believe and know it works. Have the attitude that change is inevitable, a done deal as you think of your goal as already accomplished.
Example of Food Cravings Killer: Psychologists often utilize a visualization technique, but it is much more powerful if used with hypnosis. “It’s St. Patrick’s Day. I have a craving for a green milkshake as I drive closer to the restaurant. I want it. Stop, wait a minute, milkshake maker’s are known to have very high bad bacteria; the server never washed his hands when he left the bathroom; rat’s were licking the machine at night; the sweet syrup has a drop of nose mucus that fell from the server’s nose into the milkshake. All that sugar is gasoline for cancer and increases the chance of diabetes. The server brings it with his finger in the top of the milkshake. Poor sanitation, poor hygiene totally turns me off. (The more disgusting the imagery, the better it works). I don’t need it. I’m driving straight home past the restaurant to have a nice banana, orange, sweet apple, papaya or pineapple.”
Your health and happiness: Your health is your most important possession. Look after your health first above all else and you will have the energy to enjoy your own life, plus the energy to help others. True happiness and joy comes from helping others.
Love yourself: There is no perfect person. You will always be beside yourself, so you had best love yourself. When you love yourself, you have more love to give. People want to be around others who love themselves and have love to give. Love yourself and your body. You are a miracle. You are a unique, special person. There is no one just like you and there never will be anyone just like you. You have eyes that see and ears that can hear. You have your own fingerprints; your own signature; your own DNA; your own temperature control system; your own blood system; your own healing system that heals and mends cuts, scrapes, and bruises; a powerful imagination to create … I could go on and on. You really are fantastic. You are amazing!
Believe in yourself: If you do not, no one else will. We all have our own special talents and gifts. You become what you think the most about. Pay attention to your mind, your mouth, your thoughts and your words.
Be a hypnotist in your daily life: Motivate, encourage, praise and inspire others with your positive thoughts, words and actions. Do your best so that people leave you feeling better. People will remember you more by how you make them feel than by what you say or do. People want to be with people who make them feel good, feel well, feel happy.
Someone leaves you: Why would you ever want to be with someone who does not want to be with you. There are thousands of people who want to be with you. Choose someone with similar values, similar interests and whose actions match their words. Sometimes people leave due to mental illness. 20% of the world suffers mental illness sometime in their life. A 70 year old man was left by his wife. He joined a gym, and is now is a body builder who looks better than superman.
Someone dies: Many people tell me that they went back to smoking or some other temporary stress reliever. The person who dies doesn’t want you to start smoking, drinking or whatever. Doing that will give you a second problem, and you will be upset with yourself. Instead, be thankful and cherish the moments you had with that person. Think upon all the wonderful experiences you enjoyed with that person. However, keep in mind that we are all like leaves on the trees, here for a short while and then we are replaced. This is another reason to enjoy every moment of the present with awareness and gratitude. Short term sadness is normal, long term sadness needs professional medical or psychological help. Use safe, natural stress relief techniques such as hypnosis, meditation, deep breathing, exercise, a vacation.
Forgive yourself and forgive others: Do not hold a red hot coal in your hand waiting to throw it at someone while it burns you. Live in the present. The past is long past being past, best left in the dusty old past like a child’s tricycle, old hair styles and old styles of clothing. Live in the now, the present; get your life back; get your energy back; get your power back and get your spirit back. You are no longer a victim and you are really alive when you live in the present. There is no need for a “pity party” to waste your time complaining over coffee with your friends. Take responsibility and move on to your future. You have the freedom to make new choices. Dalai Lama was once asked: “When have you been most happy?” He said: “Right now.” You have free choice to choose to live in the present. Take responsibility and walk victoriously with your head held high. As you sit or stand in that spot, ask yourself several times: Where is (insert your first name) going now…
Most people now-a-days are stressed out with work, children, family obligations, always being contacted by emails, phone calls, text messages, and an unlimited number of requests from others or ourselves to be busy. A recent study from China of 138,000 people reported that people with high stress jobs had a 22% greater risk of stroke over those with low stress positions, but that increased to 33% for women. Anger or stress release more adrenalin and increase the possibility of a heart attack.
Hypnosis can be your greatest tool for mind programming to manage stress. By just hypnotizing people, the great relaxation of hypnosis alone frequently erases headaches, physical pain, unhealthy habits, energizes, and people come out of hypnosis feeling like they have just come out of a long, deep relaxing sleep. Many physical complaints and emotional problems may automatically disappear after someone has been deeply hypnotized.
After hypnosis, people often say: “I have never felt so relaxed in my life before”. Dr. Jennifer Majersik, head of vascular neurology at the University Of Utah School Of Medicine, says “High stress jobs might lead to activation of an unhealthy physiologic stress – response system, including increased stress hormones.” This can easily lead to increased physical illness. An incredible number of physical and psychologial problems are caused by stress.
70 to 90% of people in a physician’s office are there because stress has totally or partially caused the complaint. Animals put under extreme high stress have a high probability of developing cancer due to a weakened immune system. Similarly, humans often develop cancer 6 to 18 months after major multiple stressors.
The most common problems seen by a hypnotist are smoking, overweight and stress. Hypnosis is a powerful tool to help with these and a thousand other problems. Everyone should set a daily appointment on their personal calendar, just like a doctor’s appointment, for stress management. I cannot overestimate the importance of controlling stress to regain self control in your life. Here are 35 ways to help you to manage stress. Practice one or more of them every day. You will be healthier, more joyful and more successful. You will be happier, the greatest determinant of a good life.
- Play my stress control seminar recordings, and read my book “The Wellness Journey”.
- Use deep breathing exercises.
- Make an appointment for deep muscle massage.
- Tense up all parts of your body one at a time and let go and relax.
- Exercise with a brisk walk, hike, swim, bicycle, go to a gym or buy or rent your own equipment.
- Use self hypnosis. Lie down and relax your body step by step. Remember a peaceful place in detail, using all your senses. Really be there in your imagination.
- Meditate: sit quietly, eyes closed. Slowly focus over and over on one word such as “calm”, or “peace”, or “relax”.
- Talk to a friend, counsellor, minister, or physician. Follow your physician’s advice!
- Change your diet: less salt, less sugar, less alcohol, less fat, less meat, less coffee; more fluids, fruits, vegetables, whole grain cereals, and fish. Enjoy a balanced meal plan for proper nutrition.
- Listen to relaxing nature sound recordings, New Age or Classical music which induces slower, deeper breathing.
- Drive to a peaceful park, forest, beach, mountain or meadow.
- Take the day off or go on vacation.
- Phone your local hospital to find out when the next stress reduction class will be held.
- Start a new hobby such as painting, ceramics, sailing, tennis, yoga, etc.
- Be assertive, not aggressive. Take a self assertion course at a school or university.
- Have a warm bath at 92 degrees F. with pleasant bath oil.
- Drink chamomile tea.
- See a foot reflexologist for better circulation.
- Listen to a comedy recording; watch a live comedy show or video. Some of the best lessons are learned in the Bible: “A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones”. Do not live in the past, or you are a victim. Forgive others and yourself, and move on in life. As the song says: “Enjoy yourself, it’s later than you think”.
- Volunteer to help others for diversion; new activities; new friends. What will you have given during your lifetime?
- Change your daily routine, dress, route to work, furniture arrangement, etc.
- Set up a regular time to relax, a “relaxation break” instead of a coffee break.
- Change your attitude. Why does the same event bother some people, but not others? You don’t always have to be right. You have a choice.
- Avoid over scheduling yourself for too many tasks.
- Avoid “keeping up with the Joneses”. Sam Walton owned Wal-Mart, and drove a rusty old truck. Live a simple life. No need to impress yourself or others.
- Make a daily “to do” list to tackle items in order of priority.
- Don’t spend $100 worth of energy for a 10 cent problem.
- Break down a major task into several small tasks.
- Delegate work to others.
- Set realistic goals.
- Give compliments and enjoy taking compliments.
- Never say, “I can’t do this or that”. You get what you think about.
- Make a list of tension reducers and things to do “to get outside of yourself”.
- Make your personal and family life a priority over other demands.
- Balance work with play, proper diet, sleep, exercise and relaxation.
- Be thankful for your comfortable bed, friends, food, water, a chance to work, freedom, and many other blessings!
- Above all, when you look in the mirror, say “I love myself. I am a good person.” You had best love yourself because you will be beside yourself the rest of your life. Others want to be with you if you love yourself. You have more love to give to others when you love yourself. Look after your health first so you have the energy to help others. Great happiness and joy comes from helping others to fulfillment.
Hypnosis is an excellent way to take control over unwanted habits such as: smoking, nail biting, weight loss, stress control and on and on. Famous people have problems and bad habits just like everyone else and many of them have used hypnosis to control their unhealthy habits.

Around one in three Ikarians live into their 90s, have much lower rates of cancer and heart disease, less depression and dementia, maintain a sex life into old age and remain physically active deep into their 90s.
Dr Christina Chrysohoou, a university medical school cardiologist discovered that the Ikarian diet featured a lot of beans, not much meat nor refined sugar, and that Ikarians eat locally garden grown vegetables with high antioxidants. Their exercise is digging the earth.
Ikarians regularly enjoy homemade red wine, potatoes, goat’s milk, herb tea (mint and sage), consume only small quantities of coffee, have a low daily calorie consumption, are largely unaffected by the westernized way of living with low tourism, often have afternoon naps, and sleep well with the window open for fresh air.
Ikarians are warm, friendly people, but not wealthy, as about 40% are unemployed. They are readily generous and share as if everyone is family. Family is a vital part of Ikarian culture with children, grandchildren and older people actively involved in their lives. There is a senior’s home, but it is more for those who have lost all their family.
Studies indicate that the same things that yield this healthy longevity also yield happiness. Happiness comes from a sense of belonging to something greater than oneself, and of helping others to happiness.
Gross National Happiness:
Bhutan, officially The Kingdom of Bhutan is in South Asia at the eastern end of the Himalayas bordered by China and India. In spite of economic struggles, Bhutan is often said to be one of the happiest countries in the world.
The government of Bhutan uses a Gross National Happiness index to measure happiness among its people. Happiness in Bhutan is a major goal, guided by a culture that is rich in spiritual practice and community, a sense of connectedness, and less focus on material possessions. It is the goal of many psychiatrists and psychologists that their patients achieve a state of happiness.
Are you smoking or overweight and saying to yourself, “I will wait for a live seminar, rather than use recordings”. Many people falsely believe that a live seminar is more effective than recordings. In fact, hypnosis recordings are highly effective to permanently overcome a challenge that you may have.
We visit some cities several times a year, and others perhaps only once every several years. In the 50 plus years that I have helped people to stop smoking, the most common reasons someone goes back to the habit have always been stress, alcohol or cockiness. Stress: Mainly someone left me; someone died in the family or financial stresses. Others come to mind, but those are the main 3 stressors. If someone leaves you, why would you want to be with someone who does not want to be with you? With alcohol, someone is intoxicated and they start smoking without really realizing that they will be hooked again on the habit. “My friends and I were on a holiday, drinking at the bar. They started smoking and I picked one up too.” With cockiness, the story usually goes like this: “I felt I was free from smoking, so I thought I would just have one, you know, just to see what it tastes like.” In each case, the person says, “Why did I ever take that one smoke?” For most, all it takes is one to get hooked again. You either stop 100% or keep smoking.
Financial stress: Often people have financial stress because they smoke, and that is why they are broke. The average one pack a day smoker spends about $4000 a year on tobacco, money that he has earned and already paid tax on. Many are suffering financial stress because they spend money foolishly. I’ve had people tell me that when they were young, they amassed large debts this way, and cannot today qualify for a bank loan. Sam Walton, who started Wal-Mart used to drive a rusty half ton truck. Liberace said it is not how much you earn, but how much you save. My Polish grandfather said: “This dollar does not care which pocket it is in.” My Italian grandfather said: “Easy to buy, hard to sell.”
Most people who “keep up with the Jones”, constantly buying the latest gimmicks that the merchandisers push on us will forever have financial stress. Years ago, I heard about a company paying many of the employees over $80,000 a year. Everyone always complained they were broke. Yet, their evenings were spent in the bar buying expensive drinks.
Half the world makes about $2.00 a day. We were born with a lucky ticket in this country. We should focus more upon what we have, than what we do not have. We should focus more on what we can do to overcome challenges, not upon what we cannot do.
