A group of researchers at the Stanford School of Medicine used brain imaging to discover what was happening to people while they were hypnotized. The images captured regions of the brain that were most active and most dormant while the participants were hypnotized. The team saw changes in three areas:

  1. Decreased activity in a region known as the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex, a region known to be critical for evaluating ideas. Hypnotized people are able to suspend judgment and immerse themselves in something, without thinking of what else they could or should be attending. This is why hypnotists often start the process by asking someone to focus completely on a bright light, swinging watch, revolving spiral, breathing, 2 fingers above their eyes, etc. Focus of attention is crucial along with turning off the thinking, critical conscious mind and opening the door of the subconscious mind to programmed suggestions. When the critical (negative) conscious mind is set aside, the subconscious is free to receive and follow positive instructions to change thoughts, feelings and behavior in the new direction desired.
  2. The second change appeared in some of the parts of the brain that give people the ability to separate the thoughts in their heads from the feelings in their bodies. Hypnotized people may say “It felt like I was all mind, and that my body disappeared.” Hypnotized people are strongly focused on the voice of the hypnotist. They are superaware.  Quieter sounds can seem louder. They accept instructions literally. If the hypnotist asks the person in hypnosis to raise their hand, only the hand moves upwards from the wrist, but the arm does not rise. This focus of attention heightens acceptance of instructions such as for pain control in an arm: “You have feelings of comfort in that arm. There may be slight pressure, but only pleasant comfort in that arm.” Or, “That is not your arm. That is someone else’s arm. For now, that arm is gone, and you find it most fascinating that arm has disappeared. That arm has gone on a wonderful vacation.” If the mind is focused on an arm that is gone, then the pain is gone.
  3. Stanford psychiatry professor David Spiegel said “People who are hypnotized tend not to be self-conscious, and so they will do (acceptable) things they wouldn’t normally do.” This is why shy people will do silly things on stage, such as believe they are a famous entertainer singing, or dancing with a broom as a living partner. On the therapeutic side, in hypnosis, people have a greater potential to be creative and to solve life’s challenges to become their personal best. Beliefs can be changed so that people can reach their maximum potential such that whatever they do, they will do it better with hypnotism. Spiegel said “It is a way of teaching people to enhance control over their brains and bodies…so, when you are thinking about something, you can better control how your body responds to that thought.” The ceiling potential we place on ourselves vanishes in hypnosis. Paris, Aug. 15, 1925. A fakir, Tahra Bey, is now astonishing Paris with his amazing performances.

He inflicts himself with sword wounds, which heal in the short space of twenty minutes, and from which blood flows or does not flow according to his desires.

He can also bury himself alive for a lengthy period without any apparent ill results.

Before arriving in Paris he had penetrated the most exclusive Italian circles.

Tahra Bey, a handsome Egyptian, twenty-eight years of age, is the son of a fakir and philosopher.

As a boy he went to Constantinople to study medicine and native lore. He demonstrates his strange powers by lacerating his arms and legs with knives, broken glass, and pins, controlling the flow of blood.

His pulse accelerates or slows down as he pleases, and he can easily escape from the worries of life by relapsing into a cataleptic trance, from which he awakes at option.

The fakir can even go without air. The Italian police in Rome refused to let him make the experiment for longer than thirty minutes. He was placed in a zinc coffin, which was carefully sealed and immersed in water.

A person can crave alcohol, sweet foods, or tobacco today and within minutes, his cravings may be gone with the correct hypnosis suggestions. Some respond successfully instantly with hypnosis, while others may need more time, or hypnosis conditioning. Those who can relax quickly and powerfully focus their mind on the voice of the hypnotist do very well. Those who have tension and constant fears, worries, and anxieties going through their mind may take more time to help.

Some people need to be dehypnotized from the negative thoughts they have placed in their own mind. Negative thoughts and worries can lock into the mind when we are emotional with embarrassment, fearful, angry, sexually aroused, or anytime our mind is focused in everyday life. This is accidental negative self-hypnosis. The consciously forgotten initial sensitizing cause of the problem can be discovered in the subconscious during hypnosis. This is similar to forgetting a name or phone number that comes back to you when you are more relaxed.

Knowing the cause of the problem is the hypnotist’s guide to creating the best curative hypnotic suggestions. Subsequent events in our life can intensify any established worry, fear, or anxiety. Just worrying about your problem can intensify the problem and keep it going. Hypnotic super concentration on the voice of a hypnotist and new positive instructions totally change the negative subconscious programming so that the person is now back in control, relaxed, confident and happier in everyday life.

People in love exhibit a form of hypnosis: “love is blind.” People may say: “What does she see in him?” We often imagine what we want to see and see what is not there. Reasoning with someone in love is usually unsuccessful. People can be obsessed with someone. Hypnosis can be a fast cure to forget someone after a broken relationship. The cause and the cure are both established by concentration and imagination.

Concentration is essential to a successful life. A focused mind is a strong mind. With a distracted scatterbrained mind, advice and suggestions do not register. With a focused mind, we can absorb hypnotic direction for maximum performance. The right hypnotic programming helps someone to be relaxed, to believe in himself, and motivates him to achieve success. The person becomes more creative and breaks through invisible barriers that were holding him back. Fearful visions of the future vanish, when replaced with positive mental imagery. We become the pictures we hold in our mind.

Will power to sleep does not work. Imagining yourself relaxed, sleeping soundly, deeply, and awakening in the morning refreshed, rested and happy does work when done with hypnosis. Fear, worry and anxiety attract that which is feared…”For what I fear comes upon me, And what I dread befalls me.” When the mind has negative thoughts, then the body has tension. Organs, glands, nerves, blood vessels and tiny cells are influenced in an unhealthy way. Every cell has a mind which is influenced by our thoughts. The vicious circle of tension, fear, worry and anxiety may be broken by hypnotic relaxation alone, thereby eliminating the problem. 70 to 90% of problems appearing in the physician’s office are either caused by stress, or made worse by stress.

It is important that we love our self as a miracle. You will always be beside yourself. People like to be around positive people who love themselves. Hypnosis is a tremendous tool to build self-acceptance and self-esteem. Hypnotic commands need to be positive, simple and to use imagination rather than will power. Many children and adults are held back by tension, nervousness, worry, and anxiety. Hypnosis can often rapidly achieve success where other methods have failed. We can become our personal best. Even physical strength is proven greater with instructions in hypnosis. Olympic champions perform better. People face their challenges as an adult instead of as a frightened child.

Cellular Memory:

Emotions and beliefs are stored in our subconscious mind, but also in our cells. Strange as it may seem, patients who received a new heart transplant, who had no information about their donor, in several documented cases, experienced changes in their tastes, preferences, behaviors, emotions and habits. The new traits turned out to be those of their organ donor. Those traits were remembered by the cells of the transplanted heart.

Positive Thinking and Your Destiny:

According to psychologist Dr. Lewis Losoncy, you can control your own destiny by how you think. Positive high self-esteem leads to success and happiness. We can also motivate others to find achievement by encouraging them, instead of knocking them down.

Those with a strong positive attitude in stressful situations and life are usually happier, generally healthier, have more social connections, and are more likely to be successful in work and life. A positive attitude makes you more open to solutions, creativity and thinking outside the box.

Professor Barbara Fredrickson writes and speaks on the science of positivity, and suggests that as we need to keep bathing, and brushing our teeth more than once, it is important to continue with a consistent planned program to keep us positive. Looking at situations in new ways, and turning lemons into lemonade is helpful. Doing interesting and inspiring activities that bring you joy, gratitude, peace of mind, hope, humour, and love help us to stay positive. Before sleep, think about 3 events in your day that make you feel happy. Share smiles and jokes with others, even strangers.

Abraham Lincoln said, “Most folks are about as happy as they make up their minds to be.” For example, we can “reframe” events in our mind, looking at them in a new way. We can be thankful for what we have, rather than what we do not have.

Being positive in our thinking is a habit that can be developed with practice, and especially with the right planned positive instructions programmed into the subconscious mind with hypnosis. Doing something different or something new can revitalize your energy and your whole life. Mind-body practices provide a way to train our minds to attain inner peace, happiness, a kind heart, and a break from a fast-paced society.
